Seen and Apple Photos: what is different?
Apple Photos manages your system photo library and offers curated memories and memory movies. Seen lets you explicitly choose a set of photos to revisit by their existing dates and reliable places, then save recaps or discoveries as editable works. You can use both; originals remain managed by Apple Photos.
| Dimension | Apple Photos | Seen: Photo Memories |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Manages the system photo library and offers curated memories. | Covers photos you explicitly add; recaps do not include your unadded library. |
| Browsing and search | Offers library browsing, search and location views as well as automatic memories. | Browse Past by day, month or year; search by date, city or place. |
| Memories and works | View memories, play memory movies, personalize and share memories. | Monthly, yearly, On This Day, same-place, city and cross-year recaps. Some themes need more material. Explicitly keep a work, edit it, then share one cover summary image. |
| Originals and moving devices | Originals are managed by the system photo library; iCloud Photos is optional. | Originals remain in Apple Photos. Local asset backup and restore exclude system originals; no Seen account cloud sync currently. |
| Optional AI | Some intelligence features depend on device, OS version and region. | Core recaps work without AI. Optional AI uses your own DeepSeek API key, with fees charged by DeepSeek. Photo understanding separately confirms scope and costs before sending reduced, metadata-stripped still images. |
| Devices and costs | An iPhone system app; optional iCloud storage plans are charged separately. | Designed for iPhone; iOS 26.5 or later. Check your App Store for current pricing and compatibility. |
Choose for your needs
For browsing your full system library and watching memory movies, start with Apple Photos. If you want to choose a set of life records, revisit them by time and place, and keep editable works, explore Seen. If account-based cloud sync is essential, consider that Seen does not currently offer it.
This comparison is provided by the Seen developer, not an independent review. Apple features follow its current documentation and can vary by OS, device and region.
